Program Highlights: The goal of the of the pharmacy residency program at the IWK is to prepare pharmacists to practice with a philosophy of patient and family centered care. This program will enhance the ability for pharmacists to be prepared to care for children, youth and families at completion of the program – with skills as a pharmacist that are transferrable to any health care setting.

Using the knowledge, skills, and attitudes developed in the course of the residency year, the resident will become a competent and progressive pharmacy practitioner. The resident will become a leader in pharmacy practice including, but not limited to, patient care, project management, administration, teaching and academia, and research and scholarship. The resident will complete a project focused on providing information to enhance the care and safety of our patients moving forward – not only in our hospital but for our patients all across the Maritimes.

Required Rotations: All rotations completed at the IWK unless otherwise noted.

Elective Rotations:

Pediatric Hematology/Oncology – 4 weeks

Adult Internal Medicine – to be completed at a Dalhousie affiliated pharmacy resident site- 2-4 weeks

Pediatric Emergency Medicine – 2-4 weeks

Pediatric Intensive Care – 2 – 4weeks

Pediatric Surgery – 2-4 weeks

Pediatric Nephrology/Hematology/Immunology – 2-4 weeks

Poison Information/Toxicology – 2-4 weeks

  • Obstetrics – 4 weeks
  • Neonatal intensive care – 4 weeks
  • Pediatric Medicine – 4 weeks
  • Infectious Disease – 2-4 weeks
  • Administration/Leadership – longitudinal; with an additional 2 weeks if required to complete a project
  • Major Project – 8-10 weeks longitudinal
  • Teaching – longitudinal; with a focus on interprofessional learning and education including simulation techniques



Type: The IWK Health Centre provides quality care to women, children, youth, and families in the Maritimes and beyond. In addition to providing highly specialized (tertiary) care, the IWK also provides primary care services.
