NSHA Pharmacy Research and Education Conference – Registration is Open!

This year’s conference has a “Medication Safety” theme and is available free of charge for NSHA staff (includes pharmacy students). See attached program and registration form for September 30, 2017 in Halifax NS. Complete the registration form and email Alanna.mcquaid@nshealth.ca by September 22, 2017.You are also invited to submit abstracts to present as a poster during the conference. You could win a $500 research award! Please see attached abstract submission information. Please send abstracts to heather.neville@nshealth.ca by September 13, 2017.

NSHA Pharmacy Research Committee

Hospital pharmacy residents who have recently completed their pharmacy residency and are a member of the NS or NB branch of CSHP are invited to submit their major research project manuscript to be considered for the Hospital Pharmacy Residency Award.  Application form and submission instructions can be found on the awards page. This award consists of a cash prize of $1000 and an engraved memento. Deadline for applications in August 31, 2017. If you have any questions, please e-mail emma.murray@nshealth.ca

It’s that time of year again to apply for the CSHP NS Branch Pharmacist Clinical Experience Program! Please check out the information sheet regarding the program and the application form. Applications are due April 28, 2017. As a reminder, the program provides $2000 to support an NS Branch member to spend time at a host institution under the supervision or in collaboration with a mentor in a chosen therapeutic, research or administrative area.  Please forward applications to the membership committee co-chairs, Andrea Meade or Michelle ten Brinke. The winner will be notified after the application is reviewed by the committee. Congratulations to NS Branch member Jennifer Turple who was the winner of the Branch social media contest for Pharmacy Awareness Month 2016!  Jen posted/liked/tweeted the most and has won a $50 gift card.  Honorary mention goes to Nadine Grimm.  Thanks to all members who supported the NS Branch and CSHP social media campaign during March 2016.

  • In Memoriam: Sylvia Bell
  • College of Pharmacy Awards -  During the Convocation ceremony held May 29, 2015, two CSHP NS Branch members were honored with exceptional commitment to pharmacy student learning.  Kim Abbass received the Hospital Preceptor of the Year Award and Susan Bowles received the Dr. Jessie I. MacKnight Award for Excellence in Pharmaceutical Teaching.  Congratulations to Kim and Susan!
  • CSHP NS Branch 75th Anniversary celebration – Nova Scotia Branch members celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Branch at the Awards Dinner on May 2 2015.  Click here to read a summary of Sylvia Bell’s history of the branch, and Dr. Gordon Duff’s slides. Branch Council Nominations - Our Branch is currently seeking nominations for President Elect for the 2015/2016 term.  Please refer to the Terms of Reference for this position, located in the “About CSHP NS Branch” folder.  The induction of new council members will take place at the CSHP Annual General Meeting on May 2, 2015.  Written nominations and consents are due by April 10th , 2015. Congratulations to two NS Branch members who were recognized at the Dalhousie Convocation Brunch on May 23, 2013.  Charles MacLean, a critical care pharmacist from Capital Health, was given the Preceptor of the Year Award.  Dr. Kathy Slayter, Infectious diseases clinical specialist from Capital Health, was given the Alumnus of the Year Award.

Congratulations to Brian Tuttle, who was awarded an honorary membership to CSHP at the NS Branch Awards celebration on April 20.  Please see attached notice about Brian’s many notable achievements during his hospital pharmacy career.  Congratulations Brian!

Congratulations to the following Nova Scotia branch CSHP National award winners:

Anne Marie Whelan, who with Derek Jorgenson, was awarded the Patient Care Enhancement Award,sponsored by AstraZeneca Canada Inc.  Their project was “Evaluating the Role of Pharmacist Teachers in Family Medicine Residency Training Programs: A Qualitative Analysis.” (Completed at West Winds Primary Health Centre, Saskatoon, SK)

Lucas Thorne-Humphrey and Kathy Slayter who received the Specialties in Pharmacy Practice Award,sponsored by Pharmascience Inc.  The project was titled “Oseltamivir Pharmacokinetics in Morbid Obesity (OPTIMO Trial)” (Completed at IWK Health Sciences Centre, Halifax, NS)

The CSHP NS Branch Membership Committee is seeking applicants for the "Pharmacist Shadowing Program", which provides up to $1500 for a Branch member to spend time at a host institution under the supervision of a mentor.  Deadline is March 30, 2012.  Go to the Membership page for more information.

The President-elect position for 2011-2012 has been filled by Pam McLean-Veysey, team leader of the Drug Evaluation Unit, Capital Health. Pam brings with her a wealth of hospital experience and will be a welcome addition to the Executive Board.

Congratulations to the two successful Train the Trainer applicants from the NS Branch: Leah Morrison from Capital Health and Kim Abbass from the Cape Breton District Health Authority.  Leah and Kim will attend the Train the Trainer Research Workshop held Jan 29, 2011 in Toronto before the CSHP Professional Practice Conference.

Congratulations to CSHP members who received 2010 Nova Scotia Health Research Foundation grants:

- Peter Zed, Clinical Coordinator of Cardiology, Neurology & Emergency Medicine, Capital Health, Halifax, was awarded a 2 Year NSHRF Health Research Project grant.  The project is titled "Medication-Related Emergency Department Visits in Pediatrics: A Prospective Observational Study".  Team members are Stacy Ackroyd-Stolarz, Karen Black, Janet Curren, Eleanor Fitzpatrick, Neil MacKinnon (CSHP president-elect), Nancy Murphy, and Douglas Sinclair.

- Neil MacKinnon, Professor and Associate Director of Research, College of Pharmacy, Dalhousie and Todd A. Boyle, Schwartz School of Business and Information Systems, St. Francis Xavier University, were awarded a 3 Year NSHRF Collaborative Health Research Project Grant.  The project is titled "A Prescription for Patient Safety  Implications of Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) on Adverse Drug Event Reporting and Learning in Nova Scotia Community Pharmacies".  Team Members areLars Hallstrom, Thomas Mahaffey, Beverly Zwicker, and Holly Etchegary.

- Neil MacKinnon is also supervising two students who received 2010 NSHRF student awards:
   - Heidi Deal, Masters student with the Atlantic Research Training Centre, for her project "SafetyNET: Insights and Lessons Learned from a Pilot Project"
   - Andrea Scobie, PhD student in Interdisciplinary Studies, for her project "Engaging Patients in Patient Safety"

The Membership Committee Announces a New Program: The CSHP NS Branch Membership Committee is pleased to announce the launch of its "Pharmacist Shadowing Program".  This program provides up to $1500 financial support for a Branch member to spend time at a host institution under the supervision, or in collaboration, with a mentor in a chosen therapeutic, research or administrative area.  The goal of the program is to allow the applicant to expand their clinical, research or administrative knowledge.

For details on this program please go to the Membership Section of the website and select Pharmacist Shadowing Program.  Expect to hear more about this exciting program during Pharmacy Awareness Week (March 1-5).

The CSHP NS Branch would like to congratulate Anne Marie Whelan on becoming a CSHP Fellow in 2009.  Fellow recognition is conferred by the CSHP Board of Fellows upon individuals who have demonstrated noteworthy, sustained service and excellence in the practice of pharmacy in an organized healthcare setting.  Anne Marie will be officially recognized at the 2010 Professional Practice Conference on February 1, 2010.

 

2009

Congratulations to Neil MacKinnon , Professor and Associate Director of Research at the College of Pharmacy, who was recently announced as the new President Elect for CSHP.  As well, Neil also chairs the PSN Coordinating Committee.  We look forward to your leadership over the next 3 years, Neil! Heather Lummis, drug utilization pharmacist at Capital Health, has been appointed to the Board of Trustees of the CSHP Research and Education Foundation.  The board guides the Foundation in fund raising strategies, policies and procedures, and collaborates with the Research Committee in evaluating award submissions.

Hospital Resident's CE Presentation - All are welcome to a presentation by Capital Health pharmacy residents Shanna Trenaman and Crystal Anthony on April 8, 2009 from 5-7pm in the Royal Bank Theatre, Halifax Infirmary.  The title is "Evidence Based Medicine: Pharmacist's Battling Bad Media."   For more information, please see brochure.

As Chair of the Nominating Committee, I would like to announce an exciting opportunity. We are seeking nominations for the following CSHP NS Branch executive positions:

This position will take office beginning in May 2009. Below is a summary of the relevant dates and positions that follow.

The roles and responsibilities of all of the above positions are outlined in the Branch Executive Terms of Reference.
If anyone wishes to speak to any current executive regarding any aspect of these positions please contact them via email.

I would strongly encourage all members to consider this position, as it is a very rewarding experience. All interested nominees should email Jennifer Turple no later than March 23rd, 2009.

February 2, 2009 - Congratulations to Dr. Peter Zed, Clinical Coordinator, Capital Health and co-investigators were awarded two 2009 CSHP National awards:
Patient Care Enhancement Award for the study, "Incidence, Severity and Preventability of Drug-Related Visits to the Emergency Department: A Prospective Study".  This award is sponsored by AstraZeneca Canada Inc and recognizes improvements in patient care or drug therapy knowledge.
Pharmacotherapy Best Practices Award for the study, "Efficacy, Safety and Patient Satisfaction of Propofol for Procedural Sedation and Analgesia in the Emergency Department". This award was sponsored by Merck Frosst Canada Ltd and is presented to projects that promote best practice prescribing and includes outcome measures.

January 28, 2009 - Congratulations to Dr. Peter Zed, Associate Professor at the College of Pharmacy and Clinical Coordinator at Capital Health, who has been appointed to the Federal Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.  The FP&T Committee provides formulary drug listing recommendations to participating federal drug plans, such as the NIHB Program.

January 28, 2009 - Congratulations to Dr. Kathy Slayter, clinical pharmacy specialist with the Departments of Medicine and Pharmacy at Capital Health, Halifax, for achieving fellowship status with the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacy.  Kathy was recognized for her extensive contributions to education, clinical practice, and research in infectious diseases.  The award will be conferred at the Professional Practice Conference in Toronto, February 1-4, 2009.

Congratulations also to CSHP members Kathy SlayterBernadette ChevalierHeather LummisClaudia HardingAnne Hiltz, and Lisa Nodwell at Capital Health, Halifax, for receiving a 2009 CSHP Research and Education Grant for their project "Clinical benefits and economic impact of a surgical pharmacist".

 

2008

December 10, 2008 - Congratulations to Peter Zed, clinical coordinator, Capital Health, for his recent publication in the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy. His clinical review is titled "Update on cardiopulmonary resuscitation and emergency cardiovascular care guidelines". September 22, 2008 - The Dalhousie College of Pharmacy is hosting a Residency Night for anyone interested in learning more about the hospital residency program.  It will be held October 7, 5:30-7:00pm in the Health Professions Lounge of the Dentistry building, Dalhousie. September 17, 2008 - Dr. Alexa Bagnell will present "Managing Pediatric Anxiety Disorders" at the Royal Bank Theatre, Halifax Infirmary, 1630-1730. Dinner and General Meeting will follow.

April 14, 2008 - Congratulations to Heather Lummis, drug utilization pharmacist, Capital Health, and Ingrid Sketris, professor at the College of Pharmacy, Dalhousie, for publication of Use of patients' own medications in Canadian hospitals: A national survey in CJHP this month. As well, their earlier article from 2006, titled Systematic review of the use of patients' own medications in acute care institutions has been abstracted for DARE (Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects).

April 9, 2008 - The Dalhousie College of Pharmacy is offering a free Preceptor Development Program for current and prospective preceptors to develop their skills for the Practice Experience Program.  The dates are May 15 in Fredericton, NB; June 7 in Cornwall, PE; and June 13 in Halifax, NS.

April 1, 2008 - Dr. Peter Zed, Associate Professor at the College of Pharmacy and clinical coordinator at Capital Health, has recently been appointed to NAPRA's National Drug Scheduling Advisory Committee.

March 26, 2008 - You are invited to the Research Seminar series at the Dalhousie College of Pharmacy in April 22, 2008. The invited speaker is Dr. Susan Fagan, a former Dalhousie graduate, who now practices at the University of Georgia. Her topics are "Blood pressure lowering and vascular protection after acute stroke" and "Investigating stroke treatment: Bedside to bench and back".

March 7, 2008 - Pat King has asked CSHP to seek interest from a hospital based practitioner who would be interested in being a member of the International Pharmacy Graduate Program group. The multi-member group monitors the formal program for international pharmacists whose goal is to be licensed in Canada.  Those interested should contact Pat King directly.

February 13, 2008 - Congratulations to Kathleen Shipp, who graduated with her Masters in Science in Applied Health Services Research from Dalhousie University in 2007.

We are pleased to announce DrPeter Zed, Associate Professor at the College of Pharmacy and clinical coordinator at Capital Health, is now an Associate Editor of the Canadian Journal of Hospital Pharmacy.

January 21, 2008 - It is with great sadness we report that Sister John Bosco McAskill, long time member of the NS Branch of CSHP, passed away January 11, 2008 in the Bethany Motherhouse, Antigonish. Sister John Bosco received her Certification in Pharmacy from Dalhousie University in 1946 and worked at both St. Martha's Hospital in Antigonish and St. Joseph's Hospital in Glace Bay. She was the recipient of the A.H. Robins Bowl of Hygeia Award in 1975, and also received an Award of Distinction from the NS Government for her work with the NS Community Drug Dependency Program.

January 7, 2008 - Catherine Doherty, Clinical Pharmacy Manager, Geriatric Medicine & Mental Health, Capital Health, has been awarded the 2007-08 CSHP Isabel E. Stauffer Meritorious Service Award.  This award will be presented at PPC in Toronto in January 2008 and will recognize Catherine's significant and sustained contributions to CSHP.

Dr. Neil MacKinnon, Associate Professor at the College of Pharmacy, and co-authors, have been awarded the National CSHP Innovation in Safe Medication Practices Award for their paper, entitled, "Development of Canadian Safety Indicators for Medication Use."  Congratulations also to Dr. Susan Bowles, Associate Professor at the College of Pharmacy and clinical coordinator at Capital Health, received the National CSHP Pfizer Long-Term Care Award for the submission, "Effect of Concomitant Use of Agents with Anticholinergic Properties on Response to Donepezil in Persons with Alzheimers Disease."  These awards will be presented at PPC in Toronto in January 2008.

 

2007
  • Dr. Ingrid Sketris, Professor at the Collegeof Pharmacy, Dalhousie University, was one of sixteen recipients of the Annual Women of Excellence Awards sponsored by the Canadian Progress Club Halifax-Cornwallis in November 2007. Dr. Sketris was recognized for her important accomplishments in the category of education.
  • Dr. Sketris also received the CPhA Centennial Award earlier this year at the Canadian Pharmacists Association Meeting in June 2007. This award acknowledges 100 leaders and builders of CPhA and the profession of Pharmacy in Canada over the past 100 years.  
  • Dr. Susan Bowles, Associate Professor at the College of Pharmacy and clinical coordinator at Capital Health,received the Nova Scotia College of Pharmacists 2007 Professional Service Award at the annual conference in October 2007.  This award recognizes her outstanding commitment to patient care.  
  • Dr. Bowles also successfully defended her thesis and graduated with a Master’s in Science from the Community Health and Epidemiology department of Dalhousie University in 2007.
  • Dr. Neil MacKinnon, Associate Professor at the College of Pharmacy, has received a 2007 Harkness Associate, a fellowship administered by the U.S. Commonwealth Fund and the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation. Dr. MacKinnon is the first Canadian pharmacist ever to receive this award.
  • Dr. Peter Zed, Associate Professor at the College of Pharmacy and clinical coordinator at Capital Health, received the 2007 CSHP BC Branch Publication Award for the top original research paper published in 2006.  
  • Dr. Kathy Slayter, Assistant Professor at the Department of Medicine, Dalhousie University, and clinical coordinator at Capital Health, was the recipient of the Hospital Preceptor of the Year award for 2007.
