Program

Type: Hospital Pharmacy Residency Program (General PGY1)

Focus: To provide an experiential learning environment using pharmacy practitioner role models to ensure that the necessary knowledge, skills, and values can be acquired and applied by the resident in the provision of exemplary patient care.

PRAMS (Additional PRAMS requirements to complete the Pharmacy Residency Application and Matching Service (PRAMS) application should be sent through PRAMS when applying by the application deadline):

  2. Have a functional ability to understand and speak French
  3. In a short paragraph of approximately 150 to 200 words, tell us about your motivation to participate in a residency program in a French environment.

Est. stipend: $50,000 per year

Vacation/holiday leave: 2 full weeks (10 days) + 5 "flex" days

Education/conference leave: Up to 5 days. Residents are encouraged to attend at least one major pharmacy conference.

Minimum required credentials: Either be a student enrolled in the final year of a Canadian entry to practice pharmacy degree program (e.g. B. Pharm., PharmD.) or be a licensed and practicing pharmacist in direct patient care in Canada.

Other Eligibility Requirements: Be registered with the New Brunswick College of Pharmacists prior to the start of the program. If not registered at the time of application for registration in the program, must become so as soon as possible after admission to the program.

Program highlights: Our residency program is offering you the chance to gain experience in a francophone Acadian setting. Taking place over a 52-week period, our structured learning experiences will facilitate achieving the results targeted by the program. Within each of the learning experience, activities will enable you to achieve the program objectives.

Rotations will include a combination of mandatory and elective rotations designed to give you exposure to different patients, medications, medical disorders and interdisciplinary team members.  

A customized plan will be developed based on your knowledge and fields of interest to improve your skills and allow you to achieve the targeted results.

Core rotations:

  • Orientation - 1 to 2 weeks
  • Drug information – 3 weeks
  • Distribution – 4 weeks
  • Orientation to clinical practice – 2 weeks
  • Teaching – 4 weeks

  • Management and leadership – 2 weeks

  • Research project – 6 to 8 weeks

  • Vacations – 2 weeks

  • Education – 1 week

  • Emergency (4 weeks)

  • Antimicrobials (4 weeks)

  • Mental health (4 weeks)

  • Cardiology (4 weeks)

Elective rotations (as per availability - choose 2):

  • Internal medicine (4 weeks)
  • Critical care (4 weeks)
  • Dialysis (4 weeks)
  • Oncology (4 weeks)
  • Surgery (4 weeks)

 

Organization

Type:  The Vitalité Health Network provides and manages health care and services in a territory covering all of northern and southeastern New Brunswick.

A unique organization in the country for its French-speaking management, the Network has nearly 60 points of service on its territory and offers the population a range of health care and services in the official language of their choice.

Number of beds: 1165

Sites: Most rotations will take place at the Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre in Moncton, and you will also have the opportunity to do rotations in one of the Network’s three other sites. Travel and accommodation costs for rotations outside the Moncton region will be reimbursed.
