Program

Type: Hospital Pharmacy Residency Program (General PGY1)

Focus: To provide an experiential learning environment using pharmacy practitioner role models to ensure that the necessary knowledge, skills, and values can be acquired and applied by the resident in the provision of exemplary patient care.

Est. stipend: $32,000 per annum. Additional educational funding for CSHP Together Conference (winter 2023) plus other resident-specific educational opportunities up to a maximum of $2000.

Program Highlights: Our program provides the resident with a broad range of experiences within a hospital and ambulatory pharmacy practice setting. The resident will have the opportunity to be an active participant in many of our multidisciplinary health teams and promote the integration of evidence into the decision making process for the patients they are responsible for.  We offer unique learning opportunities including longitudinal rotations in our ambulatory thrombosis and oncology clinics as well as a resident-led smoking cessation ambulatory clinic.  We support the development of effective teaching and mentoring skills in the classroom setting through our Longitudinal Teaching and Learning Rotation at Memorial School of Pharmacy.  Mentoring skills are further developed in a clinical setting in our Practice Based Teaching and Learning Rotation where the resident practices alongside an undergraduate pharmacy student and a senior preceptor in a layered learning practice model.

• Medication Use Systems (3 weeks)
• Drug Information (2 weeks)
• Pharmacy Leadership (2 weeks)
• Infectious Diseases and Antimicrobial Stewardship (2 weeks)
• General Medicine (6 weeks)
• Critical Care – ICU (5 weeks)
• Surgery (4 weeks)
• Ambulatory Care Longitudinal Rotation (4 weeks + one day every 4 weeks in either oncology or anticoagulation (thrombosis clinic)
• Practice-Based Teaching (5 weeks)
• Major Project (8 weeks)

Elective Rotations:
Residents are offered the opportunity to complete 2 - four week elective rotations. A wide range of electives are offered including:

• Mental Health and Addictions
• Ambulatory Hemodialysis
• Pediatrics
• Hematology
• Oncology
• Neuro-rehabilitation
• CV ICU
• Ambulatory Oncology (if not completing required Longitudinal Rotation in this area)
• Ambulatory Thrombosis Clinic (if not completing required Longitudinal Rotation in this area)
• Medication Therapy Services Clinic
• Collaborative Practice Clinic
• or an external rotation*

* For rotations completed in an alternate location, the rotation must be pre-approved by the Residency Coordinator and all costs associated with completing the rotation assumed by the resident. While not guaranteed, every effort will be made to accommodate rotation requests by each resident. 

Minimum required credentials: To be considered for acceptance, you must either be a student enrolled in the final year of a CCCAP-accredited Canadian entry to practice pharmacy degree program or be a licensed and practicing pharmacist in Canada.

To begin the program you must be licensed to practice with the PEBC and the Newfoundland and Labrador Pharmacy Board (NLPB). Additionally, residents are required to complete the prescribing for minor ailments course through NLPB.
